HOLLIDAYSBURG -- Blair County commissioners are inviting the public to join them on Feb. 15 in a discussion about recreational trails.
Commissioners Chairman Dave Kessling on Tuesday identified the topic for an open discussion to begin immediately after commissioners finish their 1 p.m. business meeting in the public meeting room of the Courthouse basement.
The intention, Kessling said, is to attract people to the meeting who have an interest in the topic and would be willing to offer some comments and ideas.
Kessling and fellow commissioners Amy Webster and Laura Burke, who planned the discussion and picked a topic prior to Tuesday's announcement, said they've identified a growing interest in recreational trails and their development.
Kessling, who traveled throughout the county in his quest to become a commissioner, referenced the Altoona Water Authority's effort to create a mountain bike trail. It's working with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council on a project that could create a 20-mile network of mountain bike trails on the authority's ground above the Horseshoe Curve.
Kessling also mentioned the interest in recreational trails being exhibited by the Blair County Alliance for Business and Economic Growth. That organization, a merger of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce and the Altoona Blair County Development Corp., is also advocating the pursuit of outdoor recreational growth.
Kessling said that if this forthcoming session goes well, then commissioners will be interested in holding more sessions and will announce other topics for the future.
Those who cannot attend but would like to offer comments can respond via email at publiccomment@blairco.org or by mail to the commissioners' office, 423 Allegheny St., Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.
