Blair projects receive grants
Several Blair County projects received PA Farm Bill Agriculture & Youth Grants, according to Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding.
The Williamsburg Community Junior Senior High School received $7,500 for overhauling small gas engines, while Spring Cove School District received $7,493 to update its agriculture curriculum.
Tyrone Area School District received $7,468 for the Tyrone Area FFA Chapter to purchase apparatuses for agricultural education. The Hollidaysburg Area School District received $7,500 for the Tiger Victory Garden.
Redding announced the grant funding Monday, noting that $498,161 in PA Farm Bill Agriculture & Youth Grants were awarded to 47 organizations in 24 counties, funding projects that prepare youth to succeed in Pennsylvania's $132.5 billion agriculture industry.

Course offers prep for pesticide exams
Prospective pesticide applicators can gain a foundation of knowledge about safe and proper handling and use of pesticides by attending the "Private Pesticide Applicator Short Course," a Penn State Extension workshop aimed at those who would like to become certified private pesticide applicators to apply restricted-use pesticides on their farm or property.
The two-day workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 in several locations across the state, including Martinsburg.
This event is designed to help participants prepare for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's private pesticide applicator certification exams.
Participants can register for any of the workshops through Jan. 26 for a $40 fee.
