Peoples increases rate

Customers of Peoples Natural Gas are paying more for their gas.

Effective Monday, the quarterly adjusted gas cost commodity rate increased from $2.15 per thousand cubic feet to $3.96 per mcf.

With the increase, a residential customer who uses 86,000 cubic feet per year, or 7.3 mcf per month, will see a monthly bill increase from $50 to $75, said Calon Scanlon, Peoples manager of rates.

The reason for the increase is due to the expiration of an accelerated refund that provided a credit to customers from Oct. 1, 2023, to Dec. 31, 2023, rather than over a 12-month period. A comparison of the Oct. 1, 2023, rate to the Jan. 1, 2024, rate (without the accelerated refund) indicates that the average residential bill actually decreases approximately 2.6%, or $2 a month, quarter over quarter, Scanlon said.

The commodity gas cost is a straight dollar-for-dollar pass through from Peoples to the customers, thus Peoples does not profit from the gas cost commodity rate, Scanlon added.

Peoples serves about 31,200 customers in Blair County.
