A Tyrone police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave after allegedly crashing his vehicle into a ditch while DUI.
About 8:10 p.m. Nov. 24, state police were called to a single-vehicle crash near Bickel's Surplus on Old Sixth Avenue. On scene, police said Otto "Gil" Barton II, 42, was standing outside his truck, which was in a ditch.
Barton claimed he swerved to miss a deer, court documents state. Police could smell alcohol while talking with Barton, who said he had three or four beers. Police noted that his eyes were glassy, his speech was thick and slurred and he failed a field sobriety test.
He agreed to a blood test, which came back showing Barton's blood alcohol content was 0.256%, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08%, the report states.
Barton faces misdemeanor charges of DUI blood alcohol content 0.16% and greater and DUI unsafe driving, along with summary traffic violations. His preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 30.
