West Branch student dies in Monday Morris Township fire

A West Branch high school student was killed in a dwelling fire early Monday morning.
The victim, Asher Deets, 17, was identified by West Branch Superintendent Mark Mitchell in a letter to the community posted on the district's Facebook page.
The fire on the 4900 block of Morrisdale Allport Highway was called in about 3:30 a.m., according to the Morris Township Volunteer Fire Company Deputy Chief Chad Baughman.
Firefighters, who were told there was entrapment, arrived within eight minutes to find a fully involved fire. At least one other person was injured in the fire, Baughman said.
"Asher was known for his positive attitude, smile and willingness to be friends with anybody," Mitchell said in the district's Facebook post. "His absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The loss of such a bright and promising young individual is an immense tragedy that has left a void in our hearts."
Mitchell said it is important for the community to come together in support and compassion.
The district will provide counseling services for students and staff who may need assistance in coping with Asher's death, he wrote, and "we encourage parents and guardians to engage in open conversations with their children about their feelings and emotions."
The district plans to release information about a memorial service or remembrance activities once they are finalized, Mitchell stated.
"We are committed to honor the memory of Asher Deets in a way that reflects the impact he has had on our school and the lives of those around him," he said.
A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.
