A fire in an old boiler room damaged the roof over that part of Modern Cabinet and Construction Co., 110 Frankstown Road, late Saturday afternoon.
“They were able to get the fire out, and it is just the roof that was damaged,” said Michelle Cronrath, part-owner and daughter of owner Dan Detwiler.
Cronrath said they were very fortunate that the fire was in an area that did not spread to the rest of the building.
The area where the fire occurred had cement brick walls.
The fire was called in by an off-duty firefighter who saw the smoke coming from the building.
“It happened on Saturday when we were closed — we are grateful to the firefighter who called it in, and to everyone who responded to help,” she said.
Cronrath said no one was in the building at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries.
“They were able to get the fire out, and it is just the roof that was damaged,” she said.
She said for now they have a tarp over the part that will need to be repaired to keep out the rain.
“We will repair the roof. We are in the process of working with our insurance company to see what we have to do,” Cronrath said.
Justin Smithmyer, Altoona city fire inspector, said the cause of the fire is still under investigation and they are working with everyone involved to get more information.
“It is a small fire, but we still take those seriously,” he said.
Modern Cabinet and Construction Co. is a family-owned business that has been around since the 1930s, she said.
The company specializes in custom woodwork, molding and furniture repair and people buy can wood for projects.
