A Bedford man was found guilty of sexually assaulting a child during a three-day jury trial that wrapped up Friday in Bedford County court.

Caleb Schweikarth, 39, was found guilty of indecent assault and corruption of minors, according to Attorney General Michelle Henry. He will be sentenced on Jan. 16.

"The defendant was found guilty of repeatedly sexually assaulting a young child who knew and trusted him," Henry said. "He used that relationship to take advantage of and prey upon a vulnerable child."

According to testimony, Schweikarth had a close relationship with the victim and her family, allowing him to be alone with the child, unsupervised, for extended periods of time.

Schweikarth committed the abuse while alone with the child in her family home. The child was 7 years old when the abuse began and continued for almost four years, according to court documents. The girl told her mother about the abuse in 2021.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Deputy Attorney General Joseph Sembrot.
