FFA chapter receives grant funding
The Tyrone Area FFA chapter has been awarded $3,959 as part of the Grants for Growing program. The nationwide program, sponsored by Tractor Supply Co. The program provides grant funds to local FFA chapters to support the development or improvement of agricultural education projects that enhance the classroom experiences for students through chapter engagement activities.
The FFA chapter plans to purchase equipment to be shared between the Agricultural Education program, other CTE programs and the science department to help students address real-world issues involving bacteria, fungi and other living organisms in science-controlled labs and growing areas.
Equipment being purchased is a Durastill 12 gallon-a-day automatic water distiller, BPA-free storage containers for each lab and classroom and a portable steam autoclave.

Theme for 108th Farm Show unveiled
Theme for the 108th Pennsylvania Farm Show is Connecting Our Communities. The show will run from
Jan. 6-13 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.
"The Pennsylvania Farm Show is a living story of Pennsylvania agriculture, connecting those who are fed, nourished and enriched by our industry to those whose lives and livelihoods depend on it," state Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said.

Penn State conference
on golf turf scheduled
The Penn State Golf Turf Conference, slated for Oct. 10-12 at Penn State's HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park campus, will feature sessions on golf course management, a turfgrass job and internship fair and the Watschke Scholarship Golf Tournament.
The conference is designed for golf turf professionals and industry representatives; turfgrass students looking for internships; pending graduates of turfgrass programs seeking full-time employment in golf, sports, lawn care and the turf industry; anyone interested in turfgrass management; and those seeking educational credits from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and/or state pesticide applicator credits.
Participants must register by 11:59 p.m. Oct. 6. The registration fee is $150. More information is available on the Penn State Extension website.

Funding will focus on Puerto Rico dairy industry
Funded by a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a Penn State-led research team will assess levels of antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms in Puerto Rico's dairy industry and train farmers and students to mitigate the health threat they pose in the U.S. territory.
The four-year award, coming from USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, will allow the research team to quantify the prevalence of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, the bacteria most commonly causing mastitis in dairy cows, on
20 farms across Puerto Rico.

Sorbets available at Berkey Creamery
Consumers looking for dairy-free options at the Berkey Creamery can find two flavors of the creamery's new sorbets, which are now available in the store and online.
The sorbets come in lemon and cherry flavors, which will rotate in scooping availability. Flavors also will be available in 3-gallon tubs for purchase online.
Sorbet, also known as water ice, is a frozen dessert made from fruit juice and sugar with a texture similar to a sherbet. It also has fewer calories than ice cream and is fat free.
