Three South Carolina men are behind bars after police turned up drugs and guns during a Blair County DUI Task Force operation held over the weekend in East Freedom.
According to court documents, police on patrol in the area of Woodbury Pike and Freedom Street noticed a U-Haul box truck and trailer operating without rear lighting about 1 a.m. Sunday. After making a traffic stop, police approaching the vehicle reportedly smelled burnt marijuana.
The driver, identified as Trayvon Jarrell Turner, 20, of Columbia, S.C., and his two male passengers were told to exit the vehicle, police stated. The middle passenger identified himself as Kyrie D. Johnson, 20, also of Columbia, S.C., while the third male verbally gave police his name. Police were unable to identify the third male, as he didn't have identification with him, he twice changed the spelling of his name and refused to be identified by LiveScan at the Altoona Police station.
He was placed under arrest and eventually identified as Dandre Tyreese Sumter, 24, also of Columbia, S.C., police stated. During a search, police found a credit card of a male with a different name in his possession, but he claimed the card belonged to a cousin. Police also found a small bag and a half-burned marijuana cigarette on his person.
All three said they didn't have medical marijuana cards.
A search warrant was executed on the truck and police looking in the box unit found a loaded and chambered Glock 30 Gen4, two additional loaded magazines, three paper bags of red gummies suspected to contain THC, a marijuana grinder with a small amount of marijuana and a document addressed to Johnson.
In the front compartment of the truck, police found a Diamondback DB380 containing four rounds of ammunition in the magazine. The firearm was found on the floorboard between the driver and middle seat passenger, police stated.
Police also found a Winnie The Pooh bag that contained $500, 36 grams of bud marijuana, 2.8 grams of suspected LSD and a small yellow crystal suspected to be THC, the report states. Police also found a digital scale, another bag of red candies suspected to contain THC, a glass container holding about 4 grams of THC wax and five packs of prerolled cigars.
During a search incident to arrest, police said Turner had $145 in cash while Johnson had $805. Police believe the three were working together to distribute the drugs.
The three were arraigned Sunday afternoon before Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio on two felony charges of firearms not to be carried without a license and a felony possession with intent to deliver, along with two misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and a single misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance.
Sumter faces additional misdemeanor charges of false identification and obstructing justice.
Unable to post $50,000 bail each, they were remanded to the Blair County Prison. Their preliminary hearings are set for Sept. 21 before DeAntonio.
