A fire that might have been caused by lightning seriously damaged a house on the 4000 block of North Eighth Street in the Grandview section of Logan Township on Thursday evening.
When United Fire Department Assistant Chief Tom Pringle arrived on scene, the blaze was through the roof of the one-story, wood-framed structure, according to Logan Township emergency management Coordinator Jeff Blake.
The home's residents and their pets got out safely, with the help of neighbors, who were "quick-thinking and fast-acting" -- although a vehicle parked in a carport attached to the house was damaged, Blake stated.
The property is insured, he said, and the home's residents went to stay with relatives.
The fire seems to have begun outside, where the carport joins the house, then made its way up the wall and into the roof, Blake said.
The state police fire marshal has been called, and an investigation has been started, he said.
Logan Township's United, Newburg and Greenwood fire departments responded, along with companies from Pinecroft, Bellwood, Allegheny Township and Sinking Valley, Blake said.
Crews from Lakemont Fire Department and Kittanning Trail station covered potential additional calls.
AMED, Penelec and Peoples Natural Gas also turned out to assist.
Crews began leaving the scene just before midnight, about three hours after the initial call.
