ROARING SPRING -- The Spring Cove School Board approved the creation of an additional full-time police officer position on Monday evening, using Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency Physical and Mental Health Grant funds.
The position would be for eight hours a day for 186 days a year, School Board Vice President Amy Acker-Knisely said.
"This will be through the grant because we were not able to fund the position all last year so now we have funds that we can bring in," Superintendent Betsy Baker said. "We had created a part-time position, but we have enough funds now to create more. We do have some applicants we're now hoping to follow through with."
The board also approved the creation of one additional speech and language teacher position.
Speech language pathology services used to be contracted through the IU8, but it lost its speech pathologist, Acker-Knisely said.
"Basically if we have overflow, like our teachers are only allowed to have a certain caseload, I believe it's 65, when they exceed their caseload, we have overflow through the IU," Baker said. "The IU lost their speech teacher and pulled the services."
Baker said that the district has been reaching out to other agencies to get those services, but none have been able to assist it.
"So, we're going to try to advertise and see if maybe somebody wants to teach speech here and see if we can get someone that way to help support the services," Baker said.
