Pair arrested with $9,000 in drugs

Watts

Two “dudes from Pittsburgh” allegedly trafficking narcotics in Altoona were arrested Monday with more than $9,000 worth of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and pills, according to Logan Township police and court documents.

On Monday, officers with Logan Township police and the Blair County Drug Task Force were told that two males known as JD and Bro were conducting drug sales out of an apartment on the 100 block of East Sixth Avenue. Police quickly responded and began conducting surveillance, with a Logan Township officer spotting the two males matching the description provided. The two — later identified as James Garland Watts Jr., 18, and a juvenile — had bags/luggage and were standing outside the apartment, knocking on the door until they gained entry.

When another male left the residence, police conducted a field contact with him. While being placed into a marked police unit, the man stated “you’re going to get me killed, the dudes from Pittsburgh are in there.”

Officers made contact with multiple people coming from the residence and as a result, 19 packets of suspected heroin were seized, Logan Township police reported on the department’s Facebook page. While obtaining a search warrant, surveillance officers advised that the two suspects were leaving the residence.

Shortly after 6 p.m., officers in a marked patrol unit attempted to take the two males into custody when they exited the residence with backpacks. The juvenile was detained while Watts, 18, led officers on a brief foot chase before being taken into custody.

When police conducted a search on Watts, they turned up $472, 7.2 grams of crack cocaine valued at $750, 4.7 grams of cocaine valued at $470, 4.6 grams of raw heroin valued at $1,700, 264 packets of heroin valued at $2,640 and 42 Xanax pills valued at $420.

The juvenile had $365.56, 4.3 grams of cocaine valued at $450, 272 packets of heroin valued at approximately $2,720, 10 Alprazolam pills, a schedule 4 controlled substance, valued at $100 and 2.8 grams of marijuana valued at $20, police reported.

A search warrant was executed on the apartment and two digital scales with narcotic residue were found and seized, the report states.

Watts was arraigned Tuesday before Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio on five felony counts of possession with intent to deliver, five felony counts of conspiracy to possession with intent to deliver, a felony count of escape, four misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and single misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Watts, of Glassport, faces firearms and drug charges in Allegheny County, according to online court documents, which show those charges were transferred to common pleas court earlier this year.

The juvenile was being released to a family member pending criminal charges through the juvenile court system, court documents state.
