Finding electric vehicle charging stations in the region and across the state should get a bit easier in the next few years as two Blair County projects, and one in Bedford County, received conditional awards for federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure funding.
A total of 54 projects in 35 counties will receive first round funding, according to a news release from the Shapiro administration.
Electrify America LLC is to receive $790,703 for a charging station at the Sheetz in Tyrone, at Exit 48 of I-99, while Sheetz Inc. will get $691,197 for a charging station at the Sheetz along Frankstown Road in Altoona.
In Bedford County, Tesla Inc. is to receive $254,826 for a charging station at the Tesla Charging Hub in Breezewood.
Clearfield and Centre counties are to receive funding for one station each -- Blink Network LLC, $529,988 for a charging station at the Kwik Fill in Kylertown, at Exit 133 of I-80; and TA Operating LLC, $1.1 million for a charging station at the TravelCenters of America in Milesburg at Exit 158 of I-80.
The NEVI funds support the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of charging sites. The PA NEVI program is a reimbursement program and applicants are required to provide a minimum 20% match. PennDOT received 271 unique funding submissions requesting $165.4 million for this round of investments, according to the release.
The state NEVI program includes multiple rounds of funding, with the $33.8 million federal investment announced Monday being part of the $171.5 million PennDOT will receive and distribute for electric vehicle charging infrastructure over five years through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
