Best in show: HASD highlights student masterpieces at art show

Elementary students in the Hollidaysburg Area School District will get to see their work showcased in a public display next week as part of the K-12 art show at the U.S. Hotel's Liberty Hall in Hollidaysburg. The show will be open to the public from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 10.
Danielle Mock, who teaches kindergarten through sixth grade art classes at Frankstown Elementary and C.W. Longer Elementary, said the show is a culmination of the work students have done all year.
On display will be traditional forms of art, including ceramics, sculpture, painting, colored pencils, markers and chalk. But there will also be weaving, felting, mixed media and other not-so-well known forms of art.
Students work on projects throughout the year, Mock said.
"Their work is kept and sent home in a yearly portfolio," so parents and family members may not have heard about some of the techniques students learned.
Now as the end of the school year nears, Mock has been busy selecting pieces from among the students' portfolios to showcase their creative talents.
The annual event is taking place for the second year at the U.S. Hotel, 401 S. Juniata St, Hollidaysburg.
Mock said the district's art department is grateful for the generosity of the U.S. Hotel owners.
"They are donating the space for us for the day to set up and then in the evening for the show," she said.
The works made by elementary students are not for sale, though high school art students will be selling many art pieces and prints will be available upon request.
