Four people were killed in vehicle accidents across the state during Easter weekend, according to statistics released by the Pennsylvania State Police. The statistics were compiled from incidents that occurred over the three-day holiday beginning Friday, April 7.
In all, state police investigated 410 crashes that resulted in 110 injuries, with alcohol a factor in 31 of the crashes, the report states. While there were four fatal vehicle crashes, none of those involved alcohol.
The 2023 figures compare to the 2022 holiday, in which 449 accidents were recorded, with four fatalities and 101 injuries. In 2022, 47 accidents were alcohol-related, including one of the four fatal accidents.
DUI arrests were down this year, the report states, with 329 DUI arrests versus 341 last year. The numbers were up in all other categories, as 5,344 speeding citations were issued compared to 4,784 in 2022; 80 child seat citations compared to 57; and 481 seat belt citations compared to 415. State police issued 9,241 other citations, more than 1,000 over the 8,234 citations issued last year during the same three-day holiday period.
In the region, Troop G responded to 16 crashes in which six people were injured. There were no fatal accidents in Troop G's area, which includes Bedford, Blair, Centre, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata and Mifflin counties.
Troop G officers made 20 DUI arrests and issued 735 speeding citations, along with five child seat and 29 seat belt citations. Seat belt warnings were issued to 59 drivers, and 537 other citations were issued, according to the local report. In addition, Troop G officers made 29 criminal arrests during the three-day period.
