Amtran rides free Wednesday

By William Kibler 1 min read

Bus rides in the Altoona area will be free Wednesday, May 3, as Amtran participates in the statewide Rider Appreciation Days.

The local lifting of fares for that day is in keeping with an initiative developed by the Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association, according to Betsy Randazzo, Amtran's human resources director.

There will be no charge for tickets or transfers, Randazzo said.

All of the state's transit agencies are participating, as far as she knows, Randazzo said.

The PPTA is a transit advocacy group.

Transit is an essential service in all communities -- rural, urban and suburban, according to PPTA Chairman Robert Fiume, as cited in a news release provided by Randazzo.

Amtran plans to hand out logo-imprinted promotional items Wednesday, she said, adding that Wednesday's free rides are a means of thanking passengers for using the local system.

Amtran also provides free rides on election days, Randazzo said.

Amtran's fare revenue loss for Wednesday will be about $800, she noted.
