The Altoona Area School Board has applied for a program that would provide breakfast and lunch each school day at no charge to students and their families.
Susan Frank, assistant business manager, said the district meets all of the requirements for the Community Eligibility Provision program and is sure the application will be approved.
The school district already has a high percentage of students getting free or reduced lunches, she told the board, which approved the application Monday.
"This will just open it up for everybody, especially those kids that are on the border of being able to get free or not free meals," Frank said.
In other matters, the school board changed the language of its dating violence policy, adding a line encouraging students who have been subjected to dating violence at school-sponsored events to promptly report the matter.
The policy now says the district may provide dating violence training to school counselors, nurses and mental health staff as deemed necessary.
In the dating violence education section, it says a parent or guardian of a student under the age of 18 shall be permitted to examine all instructional materials.
In other matters, the board approved bids for a few projects, including $139,682 from J.C. Orr and Son for the installation of an acoustical ceiling system in the high school auditorium with the funding coming from the capital project account.
Superintendent Charles Prijatelj said this is part of the remainder of the funds from the building project that must be used toward project related items.
"We tabled the idea of adding this because we weren't sure how the project was going to come in -- now the project is coming under budget," he said.
A bid from Bettwy Electric Inc. for replacing and upgrading the sound system in the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse for $125,300 was accepted.
A bid of $498,611 was approved from Mid State Roofing to replace the roof on the Adams Building as was another bid of $513,875 from American Roofing Inc. for the Washington and Jefferson building roof project.
A purchase of $19,050 from Institutional Specialties Inc. through the state's CoStars program to not exceed $21,000 was approved for the replacement of the swim timing system for the high school pool.
Funding for all of these items will be coming from the capital projects account.
