A Bedford man faces homicide charges in a 2021 crash that resulted in the death of a 59-year-old woman.
Mark Nelson Crawley, 39, was arraigned Wednesday afternoon before Magisterial District Judge Tonya S. Osman on felony charges of homicide by vehicle while DUI, homicide by vehicle and aggravated assault by vehicle, as well as misdemeanor charges of involuntary manslaughter and DUI, along with summary charges of reckless driving, careless driving, disregarding traffic lanes and operating a vehicle on a suspended or revoked license.
Unable to post $250,000 bail, he was remanded to the Bedford County Correctional Facility. His preliminary hearing is set for March 8 in Bedford County Central Court.
The two-vehicle accident occurred about 1:39 p.m. May 17, 2021, on Route 30 between Everett and Breezewood.
Police investigating the crash viewed video surveillance from a nearby business that showed Crawley traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the highway shortly before the crash. Police said when the victim's white Chevrolet came around the curve in the road, it struck Crawley's black Saturn because he was in the wrong lane.
Both Crawley and the driver of the Chevrolet, Donna Jean Lewis, were transported to UPMC Altoona for treatment, police reported.
During Crawley's treatment, a blood draw and testing was done to determine his blood alcohol content and the presence or absence of drugs, court documents state.
Police were notified that Lewis died on June 3 due to injuries she suffered in the crash, and a search warrant for Crawley's medical records was served on UPMC Altoona, the report states.
According to court records, Crawley's blood results indicated the presence of cocaine. He was driving on a suspended driver's license at the time of the crash, police reported.
Police stated that Crawley's actions that day led to the untimely death of Lewis and he was subsequently charged.
