Man injured after strike on turnpike

Driver was walking along road after deer hit vehicle

A New Jersey man was seriously injured when he was struck by a tractor-trailer on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Charles L. Batton, 56, of East Orange, N.J., was traveling east on the turnpike in Fulton County about 10:25 p.m. Nov. 13 when his 2016 Ford Fusion struck a deer.

Batton pulled off to the side of the road, state police reported, but he was not completely off the road. Batton got out of his car to assess the damage and was heading to the trunk to get flares when he was struck by a tractor-trailer driven by Manjeet Singh, 25, of Bellerose, N.Y. Batton was thrown across his vehicle and the vehicle was pushed about 15 feet, police reported.

Singh lost control, and the tractor-trailer jackknifed off the right side of the road.

Batton suffered a laceration to his head, police reported, and was taken by Medevac to the Altoona UPMC Trauma Center for treatment of suspected serious injuries.

Singh and a passenger in the tractor-trailer were not injured.

Batton was charged for walking along the highway, according to the police report.
