Firefighters pack Thanksgiving meals

By William Kibler 2 min read

For the 14th consecutive November, Logan Township firefighters will pack and distribute the makings of Thanksgiving meals for low-income families.

"There are still those among us who need a hand to make it a happy Thanksgiving," stated program founder Ed Frontino, a township supervisor, in a news release. "Unfortunately, 2022 has turned out to be a year of greater hardship than the pandemic year," due largely to the high cost of energy and food."

Firefighters will gather at the township building Saturday morning to assemble the dinner boxes, then distribute them in their private vehicles to 30-some families comprising 123 individuals, Frontino said.

Catholic Charities and other agencies identify the recipients, Frontino said.

The program continues to rely on the Community Involvement Program of Xerox, Frontino's former employer.

"My contact at Xerox is still there," Frontino said.

Burgmeier's Hauling also contributes, and Giant Eagle is again providing the goods at a discount.

"It's great to keep it going," Frontino said. "It has gotten easier as the years go on."

Each box contains a turkey, trimmings and a pumpkin pie.

Supervisors Chairman Jim Patterson congratulated Frontino for starting the program.

The township's fire service comprises the Greenwood, Kittanning Trail, Lakemont, Newburg and United companies.
