CLAYSBURG -- The Claysburg-Kimmel School Board awarded a $521,900 electrical contract to Mashan Inc. Wednesday evening as part of its ongoing athletic project.
District Business Manager Michelle Smithmeyer said that the district had received two bids for the project and decided that Mashan was the better option after some reference checks were done by Keller Engineers.
"They've done a couple of school athletic fields very nicely," Smithmeyer said.
The board continued its action on the athletic field project by approving its $1.188 million contract with Leonard S. Fiore for the completion of the district's football stadium, pending solicitor review. The contract was awarded to Fiore during the district's August meeting.
An extension to Fiore's contract was also granted, with a substantial completion date set for May 9, 2023.
"The original deadline in the contract called for 180 days for completion and this extends it a little bit more than that," Smithmeyer said.
During its meeting last month, the board had put off some additional "wish list" items, including a wellness center and concession stand in order to keep the project moving, Mirror records show. The board had also rejected bids for mechanical and plumbing services.
Now that Fiore is ready to start work on the stadium, the board authorized the district administration to seek proposals for outbuildings for the project.
"If you remember, when we awarded the contract to Fiore, we eliminated all of the alternates and a number of the alternates were buildings -- the wellness center, the concession stand, dugouts, some storage buildings," Smithmeyer said.
"So, this authorization allows us to start pursuing some other options."
Smithmeyer said that the district could go with its original plans as well, but it could explore other options.
In other matters, the board appointed Janell Henderson as acting principal for the elementary school. The board temporarily appointed Henderson as interim elementary elementary school principal.
Henderson is temporarily taking over for Matthew Hall, who faces two felony charges of aggravated assault by a vehicle while DUI in relation to a two-vehicle accident in February.
While Hall has not been removed from his role as elementary principal, he has been working in the district office.
"He's doing a good job for us, serving in some other capacities," Superintendent Mark Loucks said. "We kind of have a curriculum principal and a day-to-day principal. Matt's the curriculum, the grant writing, the observation -- those types of things."
