ROARING SPRING -- With the recent passing of the Pennsylvania State budget, the Spring Cove School District has received a basic education increase of $247,204 and special education increase of $84,342, Superintendent Betsy Baker said.
"We knew we were going to get a decent increase this year. We were kind of expecting that," she said.
Baker also outlined other donations and fundraising efforts during her superintendent's report at the district's monthly school board meeting Monday evening.
The Central Quarterback Club donated football equipment totaling $985; the Rotary and Dragon Pride Foundation held a golf tournament that raised $13,342, to be split between the two organizations to support the community and schools; the district was awarded a $7,500 Highmark Foundation Grant for Environmental Hazard Prevention to offset the cost of chemical removal; and the Roaring Spring and Martinsburg Community libraries each received $10,000 toward the purchase of STEM supplies as a part of the district's PAsmart Grant, Baker said.
"They recently received it and are now using it as part of their summer programming," Baker said about the libraries. "Both libraries have contacted the district and expressed their appreciation of the funds and supplies."
In other matters, the board approved an articulation agreement with Delaware Valley University for the upcoming school year.
An articulation agreement matches coursework or programs between schools, according to the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges.
The agreement would act similar to dual enrollment, where if a student went to Delaware Valley, they would get credit from their agriculture course, Baker said.
The board also approved a contract with Maxwell Transit Systems for bus transportation running through June 30, 2029.
Baker said that the district's contractors have "definitely experienced more difficulty" with hiring in recent years -- from bus drivers to paraprofessionals to custodians.
"They keep doing a good job recruiting and we've been able to get by so far," Baker said.
