Hazard waste collection set

The organization that operates recycling programs in three central Blair County municipalities will hold a household hazardous waste collection at the Jaffa Shrine.

The Intermunicipal Relations Committee will accept certain items from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, July 29, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 30.

Those bringing items must pre-register — which can be done for free at ircenvironment.org.

There will be a base charge of $15 per vehicle, with an additional charge of 50 cents per pound of paint.

Payment must be made in cash or by check — no credit or debit cards.

Only the following items will be accepted:

— Fluorescent bulbs and tubes.

— Mercury containing items (such as smoke detectors/thermostats)..

— Lead acid batteries.

— Automotive fluids (used motor oil, antifreeze, oil filters, etc.).

— Pesticides and fertilizers.

— Flammables and corrosives (such as paint thinner and drain cleaner).

— Spray paint and other aerosol cans.

— Latex and oil-based paints.

The committee will not accept medications, alkaline batteries, electronics or tires.

Those attending are asked to remain in their vehicle at all times for health and safety considerations.

Put the materials to be recycled in car trunks or truck beds.

Volunteers are needed for both days.
