Lewistown firefighter killed in crash

1 min read

An early morning crash Tuesday in Mifflin County left one person dead and another injured.

Junction Firefighter/EMT Henry Banks, 28, of Lewistown was killed when the vehicle he was operating failed to make a turn on the 100 block of North Juniata Street in Mifflin County, and crashed into a telephone pole, according to police reports. His passenger, Junction Firefighter Chase Hopple, 25, also of Lewistown, was airlifted to UPMC Altoona for treatment of his injuries.

Police said Banks was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Andrea Alcalda. The Mifflin County Coroner's Office said Banks died due to blunt force head trauma, The Sentinel reported.

Police said speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, but the investigation continues to determine if any other factors contributed.

The Junction Fire Company in Lewistown has placed black bunting on its fire truck as a way to honor Banks and has received an outpouring of support from local and not so local departments, according to its Facebook page.
