HOLLIDAYSBURG -- Blair County commissioners voted Thursday to declare an emergency that indefinitely closes County Bridge 69 on Everett Road in Freedom Township.

"I went out to see the bridge," Commissioner Amy Webster told fellow commissioners Bruce Erb and Laura Burke during Thursday's meeting. "It certainly is an emergency."

Since mid-April, the bridge no longer has a cement barrier on its downstream side because of damage incurred during a sewer line installation project. Without the barrier, the bridge has minimal protection that would prevent a motorist from driving off that side.

The county is awaiting engineering recommendations to decide how to address the closed bridge. Temporary barriers, along with a closed sign, have been set up.

Motorists are using side streets to avoid the closed bridge.
