Board proposes increase in taxes for ’22-23 budget

WILLIAMSBURG -- Property owners in the Williamsburg Community School District could be paying a bit more in taxes if the school board passes the proposed 2022-23 budget.

During a meeting Tuesday night, the school board discussed the need to raise taxes, noting that the budget includes 3% salary increases for teachers, administrators and principals. Service personnel are poised to get a 35-cents-an-hour increase.

The proposed 0.4 millage increase will bring in an additional $90,000, said business manager and board secretary Kalie Zabrosky.

"We are projecting to get $1.6 million in real estate taxes," she said.

The current millage rate is 8.82 mills, online records show.

According to Zabrosky, salaries and benefits make up 65% of the district's budget.

Additionally, the district will be paying $28,279 per month for those students attending the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center during the upcoming school year, she said, a more than $3,000 increase.

"This year, we're paying $24,700, so it is a substantial increase this year and that is based on our membership," Zabrosky said.

In other matters, Superintendent Lisa Murgas said it was the board's recommendation to increase school lunch prices by 5 cents for the 2022-23 school year.

"Right now it is $2 at the elementary, $2.25 at the high school, $3.10 for an adult and $1.35 for breakfast," Murgas said. "So we're just looking at increasing each of those by 5 cents, which we typically have done over the years."

During the board's regular meeting on May 10, members will vote on approving the preliminary budget, after which it will be on display for 30 days before coming up for final approval.
