Standoff suspect faces more charges

From Mirror staff reports

The Roaring Spring woman charged after a standoff Saturday in Bakers Summit, Bedford County, is also facing charges related to an incident Friday in Claysburg.

According to Blair County court documents, Catherine Ann Imler, 57, was arrested by Greenfield Township police on three misdemeanor charges of carrying a firearm without a license as well as a misdemeanor charge each of disorderly conduct-creates hazardous or physical offense, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

Police were dispatched Friday evening to Champion Home Builders, Claysburg, for a report of someone who possibly had a bomb in a car.

Greenfield Township police, along with officers from Freedom Township and Roaring Spring police departments, responded to the scene, where it was reported Imler walked into the business wearing three firearms. Imler was employed at Champion up to that day, police reported, and allegedly went into the business to request a drug screen to prove she was not taking anything. Champion staff told police Imler tested positive for amphetamine.

Police contacted Imler, who was in the parking lot of the business, and were able to retrieve three firearms from the passenger side of her vehicle, court documents state. Police found one pistol in Imler’s purse, another in the center console and the third in the glove box, according to the report. Two of the three firearms were loaded and the third firearm had a magazine loaded without a round in the chamber, police said.

Imler gave permission for police to search her vehicle and, according to court documents, police found a lunch bag containing drug paraphernalia, including two pipes and four rubber containers with drug residue. In addition, Imler told police there was methamphetamine inside the bag, police said, and she reported that she had smoked the suspected meth an hour before police arrived.

Imler was arraigned Friday evening by Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio, who set bail at $15,000 unsecured. A preliminary hearing in this case is set for March 24 in front of DeAntonio.

Bedford County court documents also provide more information about the Saturday incident in Bakers Summit.

According to those documents, state police at Bedford received a call about 1:40 p.m. from a Lafayette Road, Roaring Spring, man who said his neighbor, Imler, came into his residence and stole his shotgun.

When troopers arrived on scene, they attempted to hail Imler and when she refused to come out of her residence, a perimeter was set up around the home, police said.

The man told police that he was washing dishes when he saw Imler, completely naked, walk toward his back door. A few minutes later, he said, he heard his back door receive several hard blows. The man went out the front door of his residence and contacted his landlord about what was happening, according to the report.

A few minutes later, the man told police, Imler came out the back door of his house with his 12-gauge single barrel pump shotgun.

When he asked her what she was doing and what was wrong, she continuously stated, “It’s my house,” police reported.

The man contacted state police after Imler entered her own residence carrying his shotgun, court documents state.

What ensued was a more than 10-hour standoff that ended Saturday night when police took Imler into custody with the help of the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team.

Imler was taken into custody and transported to UPMC Altoona for treatment of self-inflicted sword wounds, police reported.

She was arraigned Sunday morning by Magisterial District Judge Kevin Diehl, who set bail at $400,000 cash. Unable to post bail, she was remanded to the Bedford County Correctional Facility.

Imler faces felony charges of burglary, criminal trespassing and theft by unlawful taking and a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief in the Bedford County case.

A preliminary hearing has been set for March 23 in Bedford County Central Court.

During the incident, Lafayette Road, Route 867, was closed to through traffic and residents who live along Wild Cats Boulevard were unable to leave the area.
