From Mirror staff reports
The Johnstown Inclined Plane will be closed for the rest of the year as a project to rehabilitate the landmark began Monday.
The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2023.
Detours direct motorists around Edgehill Drive as it is closed from the entrance of the visitors center to Erie Street for the duration of the project.
The Inclined Plane, as well as the gift shop, ice cream shop, observation deck and the hillside hiking and biking trails will all be closed this year, according to a news release.
The visitors center and Asiago’s Tuscan Italian Restaurant will remain open. Parking for the visitors center and the restaurant will be available from the corner of Tioga Street and Edgehill Drive. Visitors can also park along Greene Street.
The rehabilitation project will replace mechanical and electrical mechanisms and structural pieces of the incline. In addition, the incline will be repainted, the windows will be glazed and the signs at the incline will be revamped. This is the largest rehabilitation project at the site since 1983. And prior to that, the largest project was the opening of the Inclined Plane, in 1891, according to the project website.
