HASD won't require masks on buses

Hollidaysburg Area School District students are no longer required to wear masks on school buses or vans, according to an email sent to parents and guardians from Superintendent Robert Gildea.

The email sent Tuesday afternoon states that due to updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, school systems may use their discretion on whether to require masks.

"CDC is making this change to align with updated guidance that no longer recommends universal indoor mask wearing in K-12 schools and early education settings in areas with a low or medium COVID-19 Community Level," the email states.

"As a result of the updated guidance, masks will not be required on school bus transportation," Gildea said in the email.

Conemaugh lifts visitor restrictions

Visitor restrictions have been lifted at Conemaugh Nason Medical Center, Roaring Spring, as well as other Conemaugh Health System facilities due to the decreased spread of COVID-19 throughout the region.

All patients and visitors are still required to wear a mask in health care settings in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Pennsylvania Department of Health regulations, according to a news release.

Conemaugh Health System requests that patients and visitors (ages 2 and older) wear medical-grade masks instead of cloth masks, gaiters or bandanas. Visitors should refrain from visiting for the safety of patients and staff if they have a temperature of 100.4 or above, have tested positive for COVID-19, have symptoms of COVID-19, have had close contact with someone with COVID-19, or have been advised to quarantine and have not met criteria for return to health care facilities.

Van strikes school bus, injuring driver

A van struck the back of a Cambria County school bus Monday afternoon, sending the bus driver to the hospital, but none of the 13 students on the bus were injured, state police reported.

According to police, a 17-year-old was operating a van westbound on Admiral Peary Highway in Munster Township, Cambria County, when the bus he was following slowed about 2:50 p.m. The teen tried to stop, but hit the bus, police said. The front of the van got stuck under the bus and the bus dragged the van about 80 feet.

The bus driver, Lisa Gibbons, 59, of Ashville, was taken to UPMC Altoona for treatment of suspected minor injuries. The students ranged in age from 6 to 16.

The unidentified driver of the van was cited for the crash.
