Two pet pigs were killed in a barn fire early Friday in Elmora, West Carroll Township, Cambria County.

According to Carrolltown Deputy Fire Chief Brad Kelly, units from five fire companies responded to the 2:33 a.m. call to find the barn already engulfed in flames and the roof caved in.

While the bulk of the fire was contained within about 15 minutes, Kelly said, firefighters were on scene until 4:30 a.m. as water was shuttled to the site using three tanker trucks and fire engines staged on scene.

In addition to the Carrolltown Fire Engine Company, the Patton, Spangler, Nicktown and Hope fire departments also responded as well as Ebensburg, Hastings and John Carroll EMS.

“It was a great team effort by everyone involved,” Kelly said.

Neighbors and local businesses provided food and hot drinks for firefighters, who worked at the scene as heavy snow fell on the area.

The state police fire marshal was called to investigate.

The barn’s owner, Donn Mulraney, suspected the cause of the fire to be a heater that could have been blown over due to high winds.

Starting at $2.99/week.
