COVID rates remain high

Blair posts highest number of new cases

Again this week, the COVID-19 transmission rate remained high in all six local counties, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, whose statistics were last updated Wednesday.

Among the local counties, Blair had the highest number of new cases, the highest incidence rate — or number of new cases per 100,000 residents — and the highest number of new hospital admissions, along with the second highest test positivity.

The new case numbers and positivity rate are slightly higher this week in Blair, the incidence rate is modestly higher and hospital admissions number significantly higher — while the rankings in relation to the other local counties are the same for Blair in all those categories.

Blair tied with Bedford County for the highest number of new deaths.

“Just hanging on,” said Blair County Emergency Management Director Mark Taylor of the local statistics.

Among the other local counties, Bedford had the highest positivity rate and Centre the highest percentage increase in number of new cases.

Centre County had the best vaccination percentage.

Transmission levels are based on incidence rate and test positivity over the past seven days.

The levels are high if the incidence rate is at least 100, or if the positivity rate is at least 10%.

All six local counties qualified for high transmission based on incidence rate, and all but Centre and Huntingdon qualified based on positivity, just like last week.
