Turnpike tunnel work scheduled to begin

Turnpike tunnel mainteTraffic shifts are planned on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the area of the Kittatinny and Blue Mountain tunnels beginning the week of Sept. 7 and continuing through Sept. 23.

The tunnels are located in Franklin County between the Willow Hill Interchange, exit 189, and Blue Mountain Interchange, exit 201. The planned, daily traffic restrictions are needed for workers to safely perform annual tunnel maintenance and will occur weather permitting, turnpike officials said in a release.

Westbound tunnel closures will occur daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, from Sept. 7 until Sept. 9, and again Monday through Thursday, from Sept. 13 until Sept. 16. During that time, traffic will cross over to the eastbound tunnels and will be bi-directional.

Eastbound tunnel closures will occur daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, from Sept. 20 until Sept. 23. Traffic will cross over to the westbound tunnels and will be bi-directional.

Additionally, there may be some delays and motorists should be prepared for slow or stopped traffic approaching the tunnels, according to a turnpike news release. Motorists should seek alternate routes or plan extra time for their travels, the turnpike advised.
