Local area still in high transmission

All six local counties remain in the high transmission category for COVID-19, according to Friday’s statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

All six are in the high range for incidence rate — the number of new cases in the past week per 100,000 residents.

Bedford, Centre and Huntingdon counties are also in the high range for positivity, the percentage of COVID-19 tests that indicate an infection — with the other counties in the moderate range for positivity.

Either high incidence or high positivity suffices to place a county in the high-transmission category.

In five of the counties, the number of new cases in the past week has risen between approximately 30% and 50%.

Huntingdon is the exception, with new cases about the same as the week before.

New COVID-19 hospitalizations were up significantly this week in four of the counties, with Blair’s the biggest surge in both absolute numbers and percentage. Bedford, Cambria and Centre’s new admissions were also up by significant percentages.

The number of COVID inpatients in Blair is the “highest it’s been in a while,” said county Emergency Management Director Mark Taylor.

Clearfield and Huntingdon counties’ hospital admissions declined.

Vaccination rates are mostly around 50%, although Bedford is lagging in the mid-30s and Centre has ascended to the high 50s.

By the numbers:

≥ Blair County: 245 new cases in the past week, up 29%; 201 incidence rate; 7.51% positivity, up 0.73%; 35 new COVID hospital admissions, up 118%; 8% of hospital beds used; 4% of ICU beds used; 50% of eligible residents fully vaccinated;

≥ Bedford County: high transmission; 130 new cases in the past week, up 42%; 271 incidence rate; 11.59% positivity, down 1%; 7 new COVID hospital admissions, up 75%; 4% of hospital beds used; 36% of eligible residents fully vaccinated;

≥ Cambria County: high transmission; 290 new cases in the past week, up 38%; 222 incidence rate; 5.95% positivity; 19 new COVID hospital admissions, up 46%; 9% of hospital beds used; 5% of ICU beds used; 54% of eligible residents fully vaccinated;

≥ Centre County: high transmission; 396 new cases in the past week, up 58%; 243 incidence rate; 12.38% positivity; 16 new COVID hospital admissions, up 14%; 11% of hospital beds used; 13% of ICU beds used; 57% of eligible residents fully vaccinated;

≥ Clearfield County: high transmission; 185 new cases in the past week, up 48 percent; 233 incidence rate; 6.88% positivity, up 0.1%;

13 new COVID hospital admissions, down 18%; 10% of hospital beds used; 21% of ICU beds used; 49% of eligible residents fully vaccinated;

≥ Huntingdon County: high transmission; 129 new cases in the past week, down 3%; 285 incidence rate; 11.12% positivity, down 0.3%; 6 new COVID hospital admissions, down 33%; 9% of hospital beds used; 0 ICU beds used; 48% of eligible residents fully vaccinated.

For incidence rates, low transmission is 0-9; moderate is 10-49; substantial is 50-99 and high is anything over that.

For positivity, low transmission is less than 5%; moderate is 5-7.9%; substantial is 8-9.9% and high is anything over that.
