Aswathappa waives hearing
HOLLIDAYSBURG — A Hollidaysburg man facing homicide charges for the alleged stabbing death of his brother waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday before Magisterial District Judge Paula M. Aigner.
Vasudev Yash Aswathappa, 18, faces criminal homicide and related charges in the June 27 death of Suryadev Aswathappa, 24.
Vasudev Aswathappa waived the hearing under the advice of defense attorneys Theodore Krol and Christian Kerstetter.
“We think this will benefit everyone,” Kerstetter said Tuesday. “We have a good idea of what happened. We want to hear what the commonwealth has to say and get the benefit of information.”
Vasudev Aswathappa was denied bail and remains incarcerated at Blair County Prison.
Court documents stated Vasudev Aswathappa allegedly confessed to police that he stabbed his brother multiple times at his residence June 27.
According to the criminal complaint, Vasudev Aswathappa allegedly told police he confronted his older brother about ruining his childhood with mental and physical abuse.
Vasudev Aswathappa initially claimed that he discovered his brother’s body in the basement of his residence along the 100 block of Frankstown Sportsman Road, Frankstown Township, after receiving a call from his father to check on Suryadev Aswathappa.
The police report stated Vasudev Aswathappa called 911 and said his brother committed suicide by stabbing himself.
Police on scene said they discovered Suryadev Aswathappa lying face down on a bed in the basement of the residence with stab wounds to his back and hand. A large pool of blood surrounded the body as well, court documents stated.
Vasudev Aswathappa is charged with criminal homicide, tampering with/fabricating physical evidence, aggravated assault — attempts to cause serious bodily injury or causes injury with extreme indifference, aggravated assault — attempts to cause or causes serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, recklessly endangering another person and unsworn falsification to authorities.
He is to appear Oct. 15 for formal arraignment in Blair County Court.
