The 54th Annual Williamsburg Community Farm Show will feature new attractions, -- including tractor pulls and a celebrity milking contest -- when it kicks off Aug. 22.
Unable to secure a carnival for fair week due to staffing issues, the Farm Show Association scrambled and got creative planning for other forms of entertainment.
Jeffrey Walason, association president, said this year's show won't be "a typical farm show."
Vendors will be set up each day selling fair food and drinks along with a variety of other items. On Thursday, they'll be joined by 13 additional craft vendors and on Saturday,
15 additional craft vendors will be set up.
As far as entertainment and contests, Sunday's visitors will have the opportunity to see a car show and a horse show, along with a bale throwing contest and the Farm Show Queen contest. Glenn Shelton will also perform.
Monday's Youth Day will feature a youth tractor driving contest, a kiddie tractor pull, a milk drinking contest, a visit from first responders and entertainment by The Sharptones.
Bingo will be on the program for Tuesday's Senior Citizen Night, which will include a performance by Chris Woodward & Shindiggin.
A celebrity milking contest is slated for Wednesday. "State Sen. Judy Ward and a couple of the other dignitaries are coming down to milk cows for us," Walason said.
Also Wednesday, Stephanie & the Wild Hearts will take the stage to entertain fairgoers.
A parade and fireworks will be featured Thursday, while the Alleghany Tractor Pullers will be on hand Friday. Ricky Lee will entertain Thursday, while The Werner Family Band are slated for Friday, organizers said.
After extending the livestock entry deadline from Aug. 1 to Aug 14, Walason said that the fair has received quite a few more entries and they are now at about the same level as other years, maybe even slightly ahead.
For non-livestock entries, the association is expecting the numbers to remain about the same as previous years.
"With the response so far with our online entry, it seems to be on pace with exactly what we used to get," Walason said.
Non-livestock entries are accepted until the day of check-in on Aug. 21. The farm show wraps up on Aug. 28.
