Passersby rescue victims in crash

Logan Township police are crediting passersby for saving the lives of those involved in a Wednesday afternoon vehicle crash near the Blair and Cambria County line.

According to a police report, the one-vehicle crash on Colonel Drake Highway in Logan Township occurred at 3 p.m. when a small SUV struck a utility pole and then overturned onto its side.

Police said there were five occupants in the vehicle and as the vehicle caught fire, three of the occupants were rescued by citizens who had stopped to render aid.

The vehicle became fully engulfed by fire, police noted, and the injured occupants were receiving first aid from the passersby when AMED came on scene.

“Loss of life was prevented by the actions of citizens that had stopped to render aid,” police said in the report.

AMED transported the injured people to the hospital. The Logan Township and Ashville fire departments extinguished the fire. The road was closed for a time while the scene was cleared.

Police did not identify those involved in the accident nor provide an update on the severity of the injuries.
