Hastings gets $2 million grant

Funds will be used to improve waterlines

HASTINGS -- Major waterline enhancements are on the way after the Hastings Municipal Authority received a

$2 million grant from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority.

"This is going to be a big benefit to the community," Hastings Borough Council member Melanie Zearfoss said. "We should be able to replace a good portion of our water lines, and we don't have to put any money into it."

Zearfoss said the municipal authority plans to replace about 6,200 feet of cast iron water pipe on Spangler Street and Third Avenue that is "over 100 years old."

The old pipe also has leaded joints, which raises health concerns due to the potential of lead flowing into the water lines.

With the new waterline replacements, Zearfoss said the risk of lead contaminating water will be eliminated.

Officials said 10 fire hydrants on Spangler Street and Third Avenue will also be replaced to eliminate any concerns of leaking.

Lead service lines are not expected to be discovered during the project but will be replaced if found.

Zearfoss said the project is estimated to break ground later this year or the beginning of 2022.

"We still have to go through the bidding process and finalize a few other items, but we'd love to start by the end of this year," she said.
