Election workers busy enough

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Voter turnout during Tuesday’s non-presidential primary was steady enough to keep busy, election workers said.

“It went really smooth for us today,” said Shelly Auker who staffed Altoona’s 6th Ward, 3rd Precinct, at the Altoona Bible Church at Union Avenue and 31st Street.

She and Mary Beth Adams, who also staffed the precinct, were among those in line at the county highway yard by 9:15 p.m., a little more than an hour after the polls closed, to render their results.

“I think we did really well with our turnout of about 190,” Adams said.

Unofficial results show Blair County’s voter turnout at 30.62% for Republicans, 15.01% for Democrats and 6.38% for non-partisan voters.

While those percentages are far lower than the county’s nearly 80% turnout reported in November’s presidential election, election leaders said Tuesday night that the turnout was steady enough to keep them busy. And they praised the voters who showed up to cast their ballots in person.

“People were really pleasant today,” Adams said.

Ruth Hofner and Della Leonard, who staffed the voting poll in Williamsburg, said they had a good day and a good turnout.

“I think it was the nice weather,” Hofner said.

“Our turnout today was steady but not overwhelming,” Leonard said. “We had almost 200 come through.”

Election workers who staff the precinct in North Woodbury Township said they were pleasantly surprised by the turnout that kept them busy.

“A lot of our voters were interested in the four ballot questions,” one of the North Woodbury precinct workers said.

Director of Elections Sarah Seymour said a lot of precincts reported having a turnout that kept them busy.

“Quite a few said they had a steady flow, usually one to three voters at a time,” Seymour said.
