The late John F. Gority will be honored after the Blair County War Veterans Council Memorial Day Parade on May 31 in downtown Altoona.
Gority, 74, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, died Monday at UPMC Pinnacle in Harrisburg where he had been hospitalized since Easter.
A large American flag in honor of Gority will be placed at the Robert E. Laws Memorial at Eleventh Avenue and 14th Street after the parade, said Lloyd Peck, commander of the war veterans council.
Gority is being honored by the council, the Catholic War Veterans and VFW Post 3, Peck said.
"I came up with the idea this morning. I was a good friend of John and his wife (Donna). He always helped me in everything I did. I want to pay my respects to John," Peck said.
The parade will line up at 10 a.m. in downtown Altoona and will get underway at 10:30 a.m.
