Cresson American Legion aids community with can collection

CRESSON -- In a community display of protecting the environment, the Cresson American Legion Aluminum Can Collection project has recycled over 1.2 million cans the past seven years.

"This is a great opportunity to go green and protect the environment," Cresson American Legion Commander Scott Eberhart said. "Our recycling program has been very successful, and the number of cans recycled only continues to grow."

Eberhart said the Cresson American Legion has a drop box for recyclable aluminum cans, and every day, members from throughout the community drop their cans off to be repurposed.

The cans are then shipped to the Cresson Steel Co., which recycles the product and reuses it for production.

Eberhart said the collection project has raised more than $19,000, and the funds have been donated to local athletic teams, clubs and other programs.

"It's really been a three-fold mission for us," Eberhart said. "We want to raise awareness for recycling, generate funds for our local community and create a fun event for our community."

The aluminum can drop-off box is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, he said.

"Our community has really rallied behind it," Eberhart said. "It's a fun program, and we encourage everyone to participate."
