B-A school board approves purchases
Some items will be paid for with emergency relief fund

BELLWOOD -- Bellwood-Antis School Board members on Tuesday approved several purchases, including some using money from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund.
The district has received just over $2.23 million in ESSER funds, Superintendent Thomas McInroy said.
"We have to decide how we can best utilize the ESSER money. We are trying to be smart. We do not want to squander this opportunity, we want to do what is best. We are not swimming in money. We now have this money we should have received all along," McInroy said.
Board members approved these purchases using ESSER money:
* A new automated scrubber from Clearfield Wholesale Paper Co. at a cost of $16,785.
* A cooler-to-bottle filler conversion kit from APR Supply Co. of Altoona at a cost of $9,214.40.
* A project for parts and tech labor to expand the high school fire alarm system audio message library to support eight additional pre-recorded emergency activation messages from Johnson Control at a cost of $4,474.89.
The district also will use ESSER money for two textbook/digital resources programs for Myers Elementary School. They include the Wonders English Language Arts Program. The cost for the six-year license is $160,000 and includes both consumables and digital resources. The district is also purchasing Big Ideas Mathematics, with the cost of a six-year license at $70,000 and includes both consumables and digital resources.
Board members also approved several other purchases during the meeting:
* Replacement of the Myers Elementary School playground fencing and gates by Good Fencing Co. at a cost of $20,150.
* Purchase and installation of new high school/middle school office furniture from McCartney's Inc. at a cost of $10,449.44.
* Purchase and installation of new high school/middle school office carpet from DeGol Carpet at a cost of $5,914.
* Replacing 123 LED lights in the middle school/high school hallways and 10 elementary classrooms from the Hite Co. at a cost of $11,000.
* Replacement of all remaining ceiling tiles throughout the middle school and high school. Tiles will be purchased from Interior Design for $9,912.06.
Board members also approved the replacement of equipment and property damaged during a March 26 windstorm. The items include the pole vault pit, Blue Devils sign and fencing. Damage was estimated at about $20,000. An insurance claim has been filed with Liberty Mutual. The district has a $10,000 deductible.
