BIGLER TOWNSHIP -- A 17-year-old male was killed Tuesday morning as a result of a traffic accident on Route 53 in Bigler Township.
State police report that the teen was driving northbound about 8 a.m. when his vehicle crossed the double yellow lines and traveled northbound in the southbound lane where it struck a second vehicle head-on, disabling both vehicles.
According to the police report, the driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead on route to UPMC Altoona.
Tuesday evening, Clearfield County Coroner Kim Shaffer Snyder identified the driver as Jacob Ball, 17, of Madera. Ball was a junior at the Moshannon Valley High School, and Superintendent John Zesiger said in a statement, "Moshannon Valley did suffer a tragic accident today and lost a member of our junior class. At this time, I'm heartbroken. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, and our focus right now is on supporting the family, friends and students.
He said the district has additional counselors on site and will continue to do so as long as there is a need. "We have our 24-hour safe school helpline that provides students and families with 24/7 access to a trained counselor. And right now, we are just asking our families to let us know if their child is experiencing any distress."

The two people in the second vehicle were reportedly injured and transported to UPMC Altoona for treatment.
