CLEARFIELD -- Two men will stand trial for the attempted robbery and shooting of a Clearfield County man who recently won a large sum of money from a lottery machine.
Police said Richard Allen Demko, 26, of Northern Cambria and Anthony D. Guy, 48, of West Decatur, "rushed" the 49-year-old victim at his Clearfield address after he arrived home on the night of Jan. 16.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, when police arrived at the home, the victim was lying inside the residence on the floor with a wound to his left leg that was bleeding profusely. One of the officers applied a tourniquet on the upper part of the leg in an effort to stop the bleeding.
The victim reportedly said that when he came into contact with them, Demko asked, "Where's the money?" but the victim refused to acknowledge the question. Demko next took a swing at the victim, but he was able to block it. Then Demko shot him while they were on the back stoop of his home, according to the report.
After this, Guy "freaked out," asking Demko why he had shot the victim. At this point, the victim was able to pull himself into the residence and shut the door.
The victim identified the shooter as Demko. He said that he had played a lottery machine earlier in the day at a business in Lawrence Township, and had won. He was not sure if Demko or Guy was there when he won, or if they had just heard he had a large sum of cash. The victim was taken by emergency personnel to Penn Highlands DuBois for treatment.
Demko is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, criminal attempt/robbery, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault, criminal mischief and intentional possession of a controlled substance.
Guy is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, intentional possession of a controlled substance and simple assault.
During centralized court in Clearfield County on Wednesday, Demko waived his right to a preliminary hearing. After a hearing for Guy, all charges were held for court in his case. Demko remains in custody in the county jail in lieu of $200,000 bail. Bail for Guy, who also is in custody, was lowered to $100,000. The cases now will move to the Court of Common Pleas for disposition.
