Suspect charged in bait-shop burglary
Pennsylvania State Police charged an Altoona man with the August burglary of a self-service tackle and bait store in Frankstown Township, court documents stated.
Rex A. Strayer III, 27, was arraigned Saturday by Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller on charges of burglary, theft, trespassing and criminal mischief.
During the incident, which occurred about midnight Aug. 31, a person entered a white trailer and broke through a plywood wall to steal an undisclosed amount of money, police reported.
The shop’s owner told police he uses the trailer as a self-service shop when the main business is closed and collects between $500 and $1,000 a week from shoppers’ deposits, court documents said.
The suspect was caught on camera when entering the shop, and after reviewing the footage, the shopkeeper pointed police toward Strayer, a criminal complaint stated.
Police reported they reviewed the footage and agreed Strayer’s tattoos, glasses, height and build matched the person seen on the video.
When interviewed in September, Strayer denied the allegations and told police he did not have a driver’s license or a vehicle, so he could not have transported himself to and from the scene, court documents stated.
After the interview and further review of video and photos, police reported they concluded Strayer was the burglar, according to an affidavit.
Strayer is currently jailed at the Blair County Prison, unable to post his $35,000 cash bond, court documents stated.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan 12 with Judge Paula Aigner.
