Lang, Bedford commissioner, resigns

A year after being re-elected to the Bedford County commissioners, Chairman Josh Lang announced Tuesday he is resigning.

“I was presented with a great opportunity to work with the Hyndman-Bedford-Richland Family Health Centers as their operations manager,” Lang said.

Serving as the commissioners chairman since 2016, Lang said the board’s accomplishments during his terms included bringing broadband services to the Bedford County area, supporting small businesses, working to attract and retain youth to the county and expanding recreational opportunities.

“I leave very thankful for the things we’ve been able to do,” he said. “I thank the citizens of the county for their support.”

A former U.S. Army scout and Operation Iraqi Freedom-Operation Enduring Freedom veteran, Lang said he decided long ago to live a life of public service.

“I’ll still be highly involved in our community,” he said. “And I look forward to working with members of the (Hyndman-Bedford-Richland) team to provide the best quality of health care possible.”

Prior to taking the position, Lang worked full time for the commissioners.

The commissioners chairman’s replacement will be determined by Bedford County President Judge Travis Livengood, in accordance with Article V, Section 501, of the Bedford County Code, a news release stated.

The new appointee must be of the same political party as Lang, a Republican, and could serve out the remainder of Lang’s term.

“The entire process — whether requesting applications or letters of submittal — will be up to (Livengood),” Lang said.

His last day as part of the commissioners board is scheduled to be Feb. 5.

In Lang’s new role, he said he hopes to help Hyndman-Bedford-Richland overcome some of the challenges facing the medical sector.

“Having served as a county commissioner, I am aware of the social determinants in the health care industry,” Lang said in the news release. “I want to be part of the solution to addressing health care disparities in our communities.”
