Blair elections office moves to county highway yard
HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair County Elections and Voter Registration Office has moved out of the courthouse to the highway yard on Loop Road.
The move means that candidates seeking petitions to run for office this spring and those seeking in-person assistance with voter registration tasks will need to head to the office’s new location, 279A Loop Road, in the highway yard.
The office, inside the highway yard building, has an entrance on the Loop Road side of the structure.
Director of Elections Sarah Seymour said the new location, which presents plenty of parking for visitors, has been working well for the department’s staff.
“It gives us more space to spread out, more space for our mail-in ballots and it means having all of us (four full-time and one part-time staff member) in one location,” she said. “We’re also in the same building as our voting machines and equipment.”
Last year, commissioners authorized engineering design work at the highway yard building to pave the way for moving the office, an idea that developed as the basement office became flooded with mail-in ballots and expanded into neighboring areas for sorting tasks and storage.
Last year was the first time the state authorized the use of mail-in ballots, which voters embraced because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Based on the engineering design work, the county’s highway and maintenance departments undertook the remodeling tasks to accommodate the office. The moving of the office, however, was put on hold while the department concentrated on election-related tasks leading up to what was a record turnout for the highly contested presidential race.
Seymour, who set up her office last year at the highway building, said it’s been nice to have the rest of the staff in that location. They moved there earlier this month.
“Having us all together is an advantage,” Seymour said. “As questions come up, it’s easier to get answers. And I’m not running between two buildings now.”
The move also resulted in more room for storing election records that were stacked and filed in boxes and cabinets throughout the former office location.
For the new location, Seymour said 15 lockable cabinets were purchased with grant money for election security improvements.
“We can be more organized here,” Seymour said.
