Area outbreak easing slowly

Local counties remain above concern threshold

Both of the key metrics listed in the state’s early warning COVID-19 dashboard for all six local counties remain well above the thresholds of concern this week, although all but two of the 12 numbers have improved from three weeks ago.

Clearfield County’s incidence rate — the number of new cases per 100,000 residents in the past week — was highest among local counties at 343, nearly seven times the concern threshold of 50.

Huntingdon County’s test positivity rate for the most recent week was highest among the local counties at 18.1%, 3.6 times higher than the threshold of 5%.

The only two instances of the key metrics that have worsened since Christmas Day, when the dashboard was updated three weeks ago, are Centre County’s incidence rate of 294, 5% higher than before, and Clearfield’s positivity rate, 13.6%, which is two-tenths of a point higher.

Blair’s incidence rate in the newly updated dashboard is 310, down 32% from three weeks ago, while its positivity rate is 12%, down three points.

Bedford’s incidence rate is 256, down 14%, while its positivity rate is 17.6%, down 3.4 points.

Cambria’s incidence rate is 218, down 41%, and its positivity rate is 8.9%, down 5.1 points.

Centre’s positivity rate is 9.1%, down 2.2 points.

Clearfield’s incidence rate is 343, down 21%.

Huntingdon’s incidence rate is 305, down 41%, while its positivity rate is 12.7%, down 2.4.

Area deaths have increased rapidly over the last two months.

There have been 960 local deaths from COVID-19, 6.6 times the 144 deaths in the region on Nov. 15.

Of the deaths so far, 48% have occurred in long-term care facilities, according to the Department of Health website.

Centre County has the highest number of those long-term care facility deaths, 135; followed by Cambria, with 134.

Blair is next with 82.

Huntingdon County has had 45, Bedford County 41 and Clearfield County 24.

There have been 3,355 resident COVID-19 cases in area long-term facilities.

Cambria County has the most with 988, followed by Blair with 805, Centre with 634, Clearfield with 377, Huntingdon with 284 and Bedford with 267.
