MARTINSBURG -- A longtime area farmer is being remembered as a kind and generous man.
F. Larry Kulp, 77, of rural Martinsburg, died Friday at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
A native of Bucks County, Kulp and his wife, Mary Ann, moved to Morrisons Cove and in 1973, began the Lar-Ann Dairy Farm, which they owned and operated for 26 years. In 1999, the farm was renamed Kulp Family Dairy LLC, and is now owned and operated by their son, Phil, and his family.
Joe Diamond, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau regional organizational director, said Kulp was a friendly and outgoing guy.
"He would talk to anybody. He was friendly to everyone," Diamond said. "He was always there and willing to help if someone had a question about farming."
Longtime friends and farmers David Hileman and Randy Huntsman called Kulp a generous man.
"He would help anyone that needed help," Hileman said. "He was a people person. He enjoyed being out in the community."
Huntsman said, "He was such a generous man; he put others before himself. We were neighbors. Any time we needed help with anything, he was willing to help us out or loan us machinery. He never once turned us down. I asked to borrow something one time and he said, 'Anything I have, you can have, except for my wife.'
"He loved the Lord and served God. He was extremely generous. He was always willing to offer advice and help out with insight into what we were doing," Huntsman said.
At one time, Kulp was a business partner at Wineland Equipment.
"He was a good partner. He would come out at times and give gift cards to the employees for what they did for the company. He always had a smile on his face," said former partner and longtime friend Joel Wineland. "He was a very good businessman and very respected in the community. The Kulps were inspired by Larry. They are some of the nicest people you will ever meet."
Kulp served on many boards, including eight years on the corporate board of Land O'Lakes Inc., and he earned the Master Farmer Award.
Wineland said, "He really tried and did what he could to get milk prices where farmers could make a living. He represented the farmers all of his life."
Kulp was also a longtime member of Martinsburg Mennonite Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and youth leader.
"Larry was one of the kindest, most generous people I have had the pleasure of knowing, and, one of the humblest," Pastor Joe Furry said.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all services will be private. Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.
