Tyrone FFA recognized
The Tyrone Area FFA Chapter has been recognized as a 3-Star National Chapter by the National FFA Organization.
The program recognizes outstanding FFA chapters throughout the country that implement the mission and strategies of the organization. These chapters improve chapter operations using the National Quality FFA Chapter Standards and a Program of Activities that emphasizes growing leaders, building communities and strengthening agriculture. Chapters are rewarded for providing educational experiences for the entire membership.
Tyrone Area FFA selected these top nine activities as part of their National FFA Chapter Award application: 72 Hours Acts of Kindness Challenge, Look Before You Leap-Career Shadowing, Breaking into CDE/LDEs, Serving Our Ag Industry, Tipping the Scales-Food Drive, Memorial Day Showers of Patriotism, STEM Ag Club, AgrAbility: The Way to Help Farmers, and Mobile Ag Lab. With more than 15-student created, student-owned and student-driven committees, the chapter is creating leaders for tomorrow.
Chapters that received star ratings during judging this summer and were recognized virtually at the 2020 National FFA Convention & Expo, Oct. 27-29.

Deadline set for soybean contest
As the soybean harvest in Pennsylvania is in full swing, growers who have registered to enter the 2020 Pennsylvania Soybean Yield Contest are reminded that an important contest deadline is approaching. The deadline for submitting harvest yield reports is Nov. 15.

The Pennsylvania Soybean Yield Contest is designed to focus farmer attention on agronomic and management skills that will increase soybean yields and profitability. The contest is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Soybean Board in association with Penn State University Extension.

Penn State mourns loss of Keeney
The Penn State community is mourning the loss of Philip Keeney, professor emeritus of food science, who died Oct. 17 at the age of 95.
Intimately linked with the Department of Food Science from the time he helped to establish it in 1975, Keeney perhaps was best known for his research and teaching related to ice cream. Once called the "Emperor of Ice Cream" by People magazine, he was director of the Penn State Ice Cream Short Course from 1955 until his retirement in 1985. The short course, which expanded during Keeney's tenure, attracts ice cream professionals from all over the United States and from many foreign countries. Until recently, he continued to help teach the course every year.
Throughout his career, he also was involved with the direction of Penn State's Berkey Creamery, the largest university creamery in the nation. Keeney Beany, a chocolate ice cream with chocolate chunks and vanilla bean, was named for him and is part of the creamery's "Hall of Fame" lineup of flavors.
Nominations open for ag award
The Pennsylvania State Council of Farm Organizations is accepting applications for the 2020 Dedication to Agriculture Award to be awarded in February 2021.
PSCFO Executive Director Vince Phillips said individuals who have dedicated themselves to helping Pennsylvania agriculture do not always receive the positive recognition they deserve.
"This Award is meant to showcase the efforts of unsung heroes who give of themselves in promoting Pennsylvania agriculture," Phillips said in a statement.
The PSCFO Dedication to Agriculture Award will be presented Feb. 4 as part of the annual meeting of the Pennsylvania State Council of Farm Organizations held in the State Capitol. The Award will be presented in-person or virtually depending on the COVID-19 situation. A recipient does not have to be a PSCFO member but must be endorsed by one of the almost 70 members of the organization.
The nomination period closes Dec. 15. Nomination forms are available from PSCFO at vince@vphillipsassoc.com.
