Centre virus deaths grow

Reconciling figures makes it unclear when victims died

More coronavirus deaths have been reported for Centre County this week, bringing the total listed on the state Department of Health website from two on Tuesday to four on Wednesday to six on Thursday.

It's not clear how many more people connected to Centre County have actually died this week, however, because on both Wednesday and Thursday, the state's new overall death totals included those that have occurred statewide over the past several weeks but only added lately because of the reconciliation of various databases, according to department emails on those days.

The new totals added by the state may include two reported Wednesday by the Centre County coroner's office: that of a 74-year-old man who died Tuesday and an 88-year-old woman who died Wednesday, both at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.

Neither the coroner's office nor the hospital has provided additional information on those deaths to the Mirror.

The deaths of the man and woman brought the death total reported by the coroner's office to five Wednesday, including one that had been reported on Saturday.

That death reported on Saturday by the coroner's office brought its COVID-19 death total to three at the time -- even as it remained at two on the DoH website for three more days.

The discrepancies may reflect different criteria for assigning deaths to counties: the DoH assigns them to counties of residence, while the coroners assign them to the counties where they occurred.

As of Thursday, the total number of COVID-19 deaths reported by the DoH is 4,218.
